It all started on march,1953, when Wladyslaw Zaslawski found his first orchid, a Cattleya guttata, in the back yard of his home, in Vitória, Espirito Santo. Throughout the years, in his spare time, when he was not working as a mechanical engineer for the railroad, the hobby and love for the orchids kept growing. During more than 50 years, a large collection of natural orchids from all over the world was gathered, allways in search for plant quality in terms of shapes, colours, etc...

His son, Aleksandro Zaslawski, also a mechanical engineer, used to play inside the greenhouses when he was a kid. In 1991, he started working with his father in the development and reproduction of orchids. AWZ Orchids was founded then, using the initial letters of son and father.

Today, the orchid collection and the orchid production are cultivated in two different sites in order to provide the adequate climate to each species cultivated. One place is situated at 1100 meters high (3600 feet) with a cooler climate and the other is situated at 300 meters high (980 feet) with warmer weather. Besides, that first orchid, the number 1, found in 1953, is still alive and part of our collection.

In 1991 we decided to reproduce many of the orchids from our collection due to the difficulty to obtain those plants because of their rarity, gradual extinction from natural habitats and also by the fact that many of them are from foreign countries and difficult to import.

The reproduction of natural species is more complex than of the hybrids because most species require special growing conditions, specially during the seed germination process in culture media.
All our production is done in our own lab, with all the necessary modern equipment. The combination of the reproduction process and the adequate cultivation allowed us to reach a high standard of quality of the plants produced.
